Hello Everyone,
Yesterday I met at Binford with Thomas Raper who is managing the Leadership
Metro Richmond Community Roots Project. Sean Sheppard of the group Backyard
Farmer <http://www.backyardfarmer.us/> , who is helping with the project was
present to take measurements and started removing sod for the bed sites with
the help of Ms. Hackett and her science class of 8th graders. Binford is one
of eight sites in Richmond that has been chosen to receive three 10 ft x 3
ft pre-fabricated raised beds, complete with hoop frames and trellis. *Over
200 vegetable plants will be donated to Binford to transplant, as well as
seeds, tools and over 3000 pounds of garden soil. All of these materials
have been generously donated by Home Depot.* This is the start of what will
be a beautiful and productive community garden for Binford.
*Important dates and times for you to know about. Please come out to help
get your hands dirty and give support:
Tuesday March 30th 2010: *Volunteer Orientation
Try and come to the Backyard Farmer warehouse located in Manchester on
Tuesday, March 30th, from 5-7 pm for a volunteer orientation for the
project. We will be going over the build design, process for the build day,
etc. The address is 6 W 21st Street; we are over the Belvidere Bridge and
off of Bainbridge (Southside of Richmond). Please open the attachment on
this e-mail for more information and PLEASE feel free to forward this out to
any parties you think would be interested.
*Wednesday March 31st 2010*: Work Day Preparation.
Home Depot will be arriving at Binford with a truck load of materials. The
time is not specified yet, however, Thomas Raper will check in with me at
the beginning of this coming week to confirm a time. The double gate of the
chain link fence on the east lot of the school will need to be unlocked to
accommodate Home Depot workers who will unload and leave materials on the
site. I can be present to sign for the materials, if someone else is willing
to be there to sign for the materials please let me know.
*Thursday April 1st 2010*: The Big Work Day.
Home Depot will be at the school between 7:30-8 a.m. to start setting up
the site. Estimated work time for spreading soil and putting in transplants
will be between 11 a.m.-1:00 p.m. Ms. Hackett will be organizing students to
come and help with this process. I will have a flier for this event and a
sign-up sheet ready for distribution in the school by tomorrow (Friday).
Sean will also be installing pre-constructed compost bins.
*Tuesday April 13th 2010*: Binford Gardens Committee Meeting
Located at Binford School at 6:30 p.m. This will be an important meeting to
attend as we are in the midst of much activity and positive opportunities. A
meeting reminder and agenda will be e-mailed to you a week before the
meeting.
