Richmond Police News Release

Richmond's Major Venuti Named VCU Chief of Police

Jan. 12, 2010

Major John Venuti is leaving Richmond Police to become chief of police
for Virginia Commonwealth University, effective Feb. 1, 2010.

A veteran officer who rose through the ranks, Venuti was sworn as a
Richmond Police officer in 1984. Since that appointment he has served as
a sergeant in the narcotics unit and lieutenant and captain of the
violent crimes unit. He is finishing his career with Richmond Police as
the major in charge of Support Services, which includes Major Crimes and
the Special Events and Special Investigations divisions.

"We congratulate John on this career achievement, but we will definitely
miss his law enforcement knowledge and experience in investigations,"
Chief Bryan T. Norwood said. "His will be big shoes to fill in this
Department."

Venuti has been the man behind most of Richmond's homicide
investigations for the past six years, beginning as a lieutenant. Under
his leadership as captain of violent crimes, homicides have seen a
steady decline in the city over the past few years and the clearance
rates in these investigations normally surpass the national average.

Thanks to Venuti, Richmond was featured as one of the police departments
on A&E's "Crime 360," which follows homicide investigations from the
first hour until the case is closed. The Richmond episodes are among the
shows most top rated and requested.

Venuti also works in the community to put an end to the violence he has
investigated and its results. He established the Department's Homicide
Support Group and came up with the concept of "Stop the Pain 804," an
urban anti-violence initiative targeting young people that includes a
documentary being shown to Richmond Public Schools students.
