The Future of Richmond's Past
November 10, 2009, 7:00-9:00 p.m.
Virginia Union University
Let us hear from you! The evening program at Virginia Union will give
audience members the first chance to hear about and comment on the
planning being done by two "Future of Richmond's Past" working groups.
They are developing ideas, collaborative programs, and public comment
opportunities in support of the 150th anniversary of two major events in
American history that our city will commemorate throughout 2011-2015:
the Civil War and the end of American slavery.
The Honorable Delores McQuinn of the Slave Trail Commission is chairing
the working group focused on how to include parts of Richmond's history
that have previously been excluded or not discussed in sufficient
detail. This group will focus on three topics on November 10: the
under-representation of slavery and the slave trade in Richmond and
identification of specific sites; the emergence of women and
identification of Richmond sites, and lesser-known Civil War sites and
Information. Audience members will be asked to help with identifying
sites on maps.
Ms. Christy Coleman of the American Civil War Center is leading the
working group developing ways Richmond might help Richmond area
residents and visitors to our city make the most of its extensive
historical resources. Hear about plans for city walks, a master
calendar, way finding and interpretive signage, an "ambassadorial"
program for our city, and ways to involve young people and teachers.
Audience members will be invited to provide feedback and suggestions.
Virginia Union University and President Claude G. Perkins are hosting
this second conversation. The program will be held in the Virginia Union
University Performing Arts Theater. A campus map

in Building #14. Visitor parking is across the street, adjacent to Hovey
Field. Virginia Union University, Virginia Commonwealth University, and
the University of Richmond are offering venues and coordination for
planning in addition to their educational resources and links to our
area's past.
If your organization or group is interested in providing materials or
displays for the November 10 program, please indicate this in your email
response.
A limited number of DVDs of the first "Future of Richmond's Past"
program held at the University of Richmond on September 29, 2009 will be
available. If you would like to pick up a copy of the DVD at the
