March 6, 2009

To the VCU and VCU Health System Communities:

VCU Police report that four robberies were committed early this morning by
an unknown assailant in the vicinity of the Monroe Park Campus. Three of
the robberies involved students. There were no injuries.

Victims described the suspect as a black male, between 5 feet 8 inches and 5
feet 10 inches tall, thin build and around 30 years old. He displayed a
knife in three of the four incidents. In two incidents, he wore a black
jacket with a fur hood and a red shirt. He also was described as wearing a
blue vest with a white shirt in one of the incidents. He wore a hat in two
incidents and was described as having close-cut hair.

The first robbery happened around midnight at the intersections of South
Laurel and West Cary streets and involved one student victim. The second
robbery happened approximately 12:55 in Monroe Park and involved two
students. The third robbery happened at 1:05 a.m. near the Oliver Hall
loading dock at Harrison and Main streets and involved two students. A
fourth robbery at 3:50 a.m. happened at Cumberland and Belvidere streets.
The victim in the last robbery was not a VCU student.

VCU Police and the Richmond Police departments are working together to
identify and apprehend the suspect. They ask that you report any suspicious
activity (828-1234) and to use the VCU Escort Service (828-WALK). VCU Police
also remind VCU students, faculty and staff to use well traveled and lit
areas when walking at nighttime around or near campus, to notify police
immediately of any suspicious activity or if they are victims of a crime and
to travel in groups. The university community also is reminded that more
than 300 emergency phones with a direct line to VCU Police are located
throughout the Monroe Park and MCV campuses.
