Subject: Friends of Moore Street School
Friends of Moore Street School (FOMSS),
Moore Street School (built ca.1887) located in the Carver Community of
Richmond, is one of few remaining public schools built for African
Americans after Reconstruction. Unoccupied and attached to Carver
Elementary School, the building is deteriorating; a significant part of
Richmond's history may soon be lost.
Councilman Charles Samuels recognizes that this significant piece of
Richmond's history needs to be saved. He was able to get City Council to
appropriate $380,000 towards steps to protect the building from further
decline. Friends of Moore Street School (FOMSS), is a newly formed
advocacy group consisting of concerned individuals and organizations,
such as VCU, VUU, U of R, CACIL (Carver Area Civic Improvement League),
William Byrd Community House, several other civic and community
organizations, developers, educators, historians, and previous students
of Moore Street School. FOMSS are attempting to enlighten the public,
and seek partners to help determine a future re-use of the building that
will include some community outreach and some sort of creative
public-private-community owner-partnership.
Please join us at City Council on this Monday night at 6:00pm to show
your support for our efforts to preserve this piece of history. Barbara
Abernathy, past-President of CACIL and former student of Moore Street
School, and I, are on the agenda to speak to this issue. On January 14,
2007 a "paper" sponsored by Charles Samuels and Mayor Jones in support
of saving the building will be introduced to City Council and a vote
taken on January 25. We will need your support again.
Please meet us at Council on Monday night at 6:00pm and stand with us in
support of saving Moore Street School.
